July 6, 2016 or July 8, 2016 Eid’l Fitr National Holiday and No Classes in the Philippines?

MANILA, Philippines – Eid’l Fitr also known as “End of Ramadan” or “Pagtatapos ng Pag-aayuno” is a national holiday that commemorates the end of Islamic holy month of fasting. Though Philippines is a Christian country in general, the date has been imposed as national holiday through RA 9177 since 2002 in respect to the country’s Muslim community.

Republic Act (RA) 9177 is an “Act declaring the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic Calendar, a national holiday for the observance of Eidul Fitr and the 10th day of Zhuld Hijja, the 12th month of the Islamic Calendar, a regional holiday in the autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao for the observance of Eidul Adha”

The celebration depends in the lunar calendar (moon-sighting). The National Commission of Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) is the commission in charge to inform the Office of the President on which date it will fall.

However, there were confusions as to when is the actual Eid’l Fitr holiday in the Philippines for year 2016. Is it July 6, 2016 or July 8, 2016? Some reliable websites says July 6 while others, July 8.

Update as of July 4, 2016: Malacanang has officially declared July 6, 2016 as a non-working holiday to celebrate Eid’l Fitr. The declaration was confirmed by Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella in a press briefing Monday, July 4, 2016

Update as of July 3, 2016: Malacanang through Presidential Communications Office Secretary Martin Andanar said in an interview on State-Run Radyo ng Bayan that it is likely that the holiday will be declared on Wednesday, July 6, 2016.

As quoted,

“Well, napag-usapan namin iyan ni Executive Secretary (Salvador) Medialdea at ito po ay sa July 6. Pero hintayin na lang po natin ‘yung opisyal na announcement ngayong darating na Lunes or Martes po,”

Eid’l Fitr was already marked as official holiday by DepEd in the Department Order No. 9 series of 2016 or the “School Calendar for School Year 2015-2016”. Whether it is on Wednesday or Friday, no classes will be imposed at all levels. [Screenshot below courtesy of DepEd]

Soon as the office of the president officially announced the exact date of the holiday, we will inform our readers right away.

In other countries, it's either July 5 or 6… it would be better if it falls on July 8 so it's a long weekend.

Moving the day of the holiday, will not harm? It harms and confuses the young and it harbors disrespect for history and for the actual date of the holiday. There are events were tradition should prevail over practicality and whim.

The day is for our muslims brothers and sisters and not for us. Let us set aside our own convenience for the sake giving respect to what our muslims brother would like to observe. That way, the relationship between filipino muslims and christians will not further stained due to our differences. So respect is a must. If it is really july 06 then so be it.

Erratum, the edited version of this comment is right below it.

Did some of you even read the article? it was based on moon sightings, not on convenience (long weekend). The holiday is in RESPECT for Muslim community (where is you respect then?). Now if you could postpone the sightings of the moon up to night of July 7th, then it should be then celebrated at July 8th.
