DepEd needs more Teachers for Science and Math Subjects

MANILA, Philippines – Education Secretary Leonor Briones said that the Department of Education (DepEd) needs more teachers especially for Science and Math subjects.

As quoted from her statement at the House appropriation committee hearing on its proposed Php567.56 billion budget for the year 2017,

We have a challenge in hiring Math and Science teachers…. a huge army of teachers, we’ll recruit more,

We lack teachers and we are not displacing teachers,

DepEd is allotting Php15.5 billion to hire 53,831 basic education teachers next year and about Php4.5 billion to purchase Science and Math equipment packages.

The secretary said that since June 2016, the department has created 36,461 teaching slots for Senior High School program alone, as part of the implementation of the K-12 education program. As quoted from Inquirer news, DepEd has already hired 3,950 teachers from Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) which were affected by K-12 transition program.

An “Above Entry-level Salary Grades” will also be given to graduates of Science and Technology graduates under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Science Education Institute’s Junior Level Science Scholarships.

Those hired will also receive a training program which will qualify them to take the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) from PRC.

Meanwhile, DepEd also encouraged the following to apply as part time teachers for the Senior High School program.

  • Graduates of Engineering, Mathematics and Science Courses without PRC LET license
  • Graduates of Tech-Voc courses with TESDA certifications
  • Practitioners with expertise in specialized learning offered in K-12
