Optometry Licensure Exam Results

MANILA, Philippines – The October 2023 Optometry licensure exam results, including the complete list of board passers, top 10 examinees, and overall performance of schools, are released by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) Board of Optometry in four (4) working days after the last day of exams.

As announced, 153 out of 226 examinees successfully passed the exams.

The Licensure Exam for Optometrists was conducted on October 10-18,2023 (Written and Practical) at testing centers located in NCR, Cebu, Davao, and Rosales. The licensure examinations are administered by the PRC Board of Optometry headed by its Chairman, Dr. Irene Christine C. Peliño, and its members, Dr. Bernardita A. Garcia, Dr. Mario T. Flores, Jr. and Dr. Christine S. Rodriguez.

Performance of Schools

Below are the October 2023 optometry licensure exams top-performing schools, having 50 or more examinees pass and with at least an 80% overall passing percentage, as per Commission Resolution No.  2017-1058 (C) series of 2017, courtesy of PRC.

Release of Results

The October 2023 Optometrist board exam results will be released on October 24, 2023, per Resolution No. 1589 series of 2022, entitled “Schedule of the Licensure Exam for the Year 2023“.

Schedule of Registration

The schedule of online appointments for issuance of Professional ID and Certificate of Registration for the new Optometrists will be held on the following date(s):

Date(s) of Registration: December 5 to December 6, 2023

Initial registrants are advised to register online via the PRC official website via https://online.prc.gov.ph/ and follow the steps in online registration. Here are the registration requirements:

  • Notice of Admission/NOA (for identification purposes only)
  • Duly accomplished Oath Form or Panunumpa ng Propesyonal
  • Two (2) pieces of passport-sized ID photos in white background and with complete name tag
  • Two (2) sets of documentary stamp
  • One (1) piece short brown envelope

PRC added that successful examinees should personally register and sign in the Roster of Registered Professionals.

Verification of Ratings

The verification of ratings and test results for the Optometry licensure exams will be available online a few working days after the posting of results.

Successful takers can refer to the PRC official website and use the Verification Page to know their board examination passing rate.

As posted, a passer shall only provide the exam name, the date of examination, the application number, first name and last name and the birth-date.

Oath-Taking

All successful examinees interested in attending the face-to-face mass oath-taking shall register no later than 12:00 NN of the day before the date of the oath-taking at http://online.prc.gov.ph to confirm their attendance.

Further, inductees shall bring ANY of the following on the day of the oath-taking:

  • Vaccination Card
  • Negative RT-PCR results took within 48 hours before the oath-taking

Inductees are advised to register and confirm their attendance in the regions where they took their licensure examination and intend to register as professionals.

Examination Coverage

The board exam for Optometrist (written) covered the following topics:

  • Ocular Pharmacology 10%; 
  • Ocular/Visual Biology 10%; 
  • Primary Care and Refraction 15%; 
  • Practical, Theoretical and Opthalmic Dispensing including Contact Lenses 15%; 
  • Ocular Diseases and Ocular Emergencies 10%; 
  • Jurisprudence, Ethics and Practice Management 10%; 
  • Physiological Optics, Binocular Vision and Perception 15%; 
  • Clinical Optometry and Specialty Areas in Optometry 15%.

Meanwhile, practical tests include objective examination, subjective examination, ophthalmic lens laboratory, clinical optometry, and contact lens practice.

Previous Exams

Optometry is one of the programs with fewer examinees being administered by PRC.

In the previous optometry licensure exams held in October 2022, 179 out of 285 examinees passed. Giuseppe Roy Cabatic Campilan from Southwestern University ranked first, garnering a rating of 89.83%. Southwestern University was the top-performing school, having 85.53% rating.

The newly licensed Optometrists’ oath-taking ceremony will be done online, now referred to as the “e-oath.” The application system for the e-oath can be accessed online via PRC dedicated portal at https://online.prc.gov.ph/ and select “e-OATH” as a transaction.

Inductees are required to print the “OATH OF PROFESSIONAL” form that is downloadable at the PRC Online Services.

Meanwhile, PRC has started scheduling face-to-face oath-taking for newly licensed professionals. This section will be updated should PRC conduct face-to-face oathtaking for new optometrists.

Previous Exams

Optometry is one of the programs with less number of examinees being administered by PRC.

In the previous Optometrists licensure exams held on July 2019, 260 out of 295 examinees passed. Gretha Mangahas Pabustan from Centro Escolar University – Manila was the topnotcher garnering 80.29%, followed by Ryan Benzon Seng Caligner from Davao Doctors College, Inc., 88.16%. Centro Escolar University – Manila was the top-performing school having a 90.91% rating.

On July 2018 exams, 188 out of 222 examinees passed. Morel Paul Sumaoang Abesamis from Manila Central University – Caloocan City ranked first in the exams garnering a rating of 87.23% followed by Marinella Sunga Ramos from Centro Escolar University – Manila having 86.35%. Centro Escolar University – Manila was the lone school in the top performing schools list having 82 out of 94 examinees passed or 87.23% overall passing rate.
