PROCLAMATION NO. 56

DECLARING MONDAY, 12 SEPTEMBER 2016, AS A REGULAR HOLIDAY THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY IN OBSRVANCE OF EID’L ADHA (FEAST OF SACRIFICE)

WHEREAS, Eid’l Adha is one of the two greatest feasts of Islam;

WHEREAS, Republic Act no. 9849 provides that Eid’l Adha shall be celebrated as a regular holiday;

WHEREAS, the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos has recommended that the observance of Eid’l Adha be on 12 September 2016;

NOW, THEREFORE, I RODRIGO ROA DUTERTE, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare Monday, 12 September 2016, as a regular holiday throughout the country in observance of Eid’l Adha (Feast of Sacrifice).

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the Republic of the Philippines to be affixed.

DONE in the City of Manila, this 5th day of September in the year of Our Lord, Two Thousand and Sixteen.

Eid’l Adha is the second national holiday celebrated by the Muslim community to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son before God, through his angel Jibra’il and informs him that the sacrifice has already been accepted. It is also one of the Islam’s holiest events celebrated annually by the Muslims.

Though Philippines is a Christian country, the date has been imposed to be regular holiday through RA 9849 signed by former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in respect to country’s Muslim community.

Republic Act (RA 9849) is “An act declaring the Tenth day of Zhul Hijja, the Twelfth Month of the Islamic Calendar, a National Holiday for the observance of Eidul Adha, further amending for the purpose section 26, Chapter 7, Book 1 of the Executive Order No. 292, otherwise known as Administrative Code of 1987, as amended”

The celebration depends in the lunar calendar (moon-sighting). The National Commission of Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) is the commission in charge to inform the Office of the President on which date it falls. The President will then issue a proclamation declaring the endorsed date as a regular holiday.

International reports said that Eid’l Adha will begin on September 12, 2016 as it failed to sight the moon on September 1, 2016.
